I am sorry to hear about your problems regarding the use of Cartrophen Vet and the subsequent vestibular attack that your dog has suffered. In this case it is most likely to be the Cartrophen that was to blame for the vestibular attack but not for the brain tumours. As a clinician I use a lot of Cartrophen as it gives good results in 70 per cent or more cases and is economical to use but it does have one major complication. The action of Cartrophen is to stimulate the glandular tissue in the joint however this is not specific and you do get some stimulation of other glandular tissues which if cancerous can lead to more rapid growth of any undiagnosed mass. The main problem that occurs however is that the Cartrophen stops platelet aggregation or in other words stops blood clotting normally. This can lead to bleeding especially inside a mass. In this case the bleeding would have given rise to sudden increase in pressure in the brain causing your symptoms. Vivitonin acts to increase the oxygen availability in the brain without increasing blood pressure so will have helped to some degree initially but should not be used longer term in case it improves oxygenation of the brain tumours and increases their rate of growth. There has been work done more recently with diets at trying to improve tumour control. Hills make two diets which could be beneficial one is N/d which is specifically made for cancer patients and the other is B/d which is made for dogs with brain problems and may be beneficial. Neither diet will have any side effects apart from possible transient diarrhoea when you start. There is also a tablet called Activait that has been launched last week and should be in the wholesalers within the next 2 weeks that could be beneficial in slowing the brain tumours down. I hope you manage to get a fair period of reasonable quality life for a while to come.As for your other dog, it is always hard to try a treatment again when something has gone so badly wrong. Side-affects with Cartrophen are around one per cent which is quite high but the vast majority of these are not serious problems. There are also other treatments available especially non steroidals with Metacam and Rimadyl being probably the best and also the use of nutritional supplements like Synoquin or Cosequin that work very well in helping the cartilage to repair but can be expensive to use. Cheaper treatments include use of greenlip mussel or artphyton but in my personal experience these do not work in anywhere as many cases.I hope this has been of some benefit and if you need any further help just ask.Paul J. Wilson
