Is is possible for a dog’s personality to change?
My dog(1 year old Golden) really likes people and he tries to socilize with all the strangers or dogs he sees. Since puppyhood, he has been a VERY active dog, has interests in everything, and not easily scared by unknown things. (e.g. I did some puppy test on him when he was 3 months. One test is that I tried to suddenly open an umbrella in front of him. he was startled and stepped back one step when i first did it. But when I did it again, he was not afraid anymore and even tried to come up to play with the umbrella.)

Just a day ago he has turned 1 year old, but he is still acting like a puppy… He loves whoever wants to pet him and shows his affection by “rubbing his head” on that person.(He doesn’t lick at all.) He obeys the sit command, but still gets over-excited when people pet him!! -> you can see his excitement because, even though he IS sitting, he keeps rubbing his head on the person and wages his tail crazily. At home, unless he is sleeping, he is never AT REST–always walking around, sniffing things, chewing or playing his toys. He gets excited when we go out too– he keeps circling around me and jumps up and down once we step out of the door…and will not settle down unless I sternly tell him to walk properly…(but he will settle if i tell him to “走好!”-> that’s the command i use…)

To conclude, he is a year old already but still acts like a puppy!! I don’t necessary mean he is behaving in a bad way, but he does not have the alert, calm, gentleness or grace that an adult dog should have.

WHY is he still like a puppy?? I think partially it is because I ‘encouraged’ him by smiling at lots of his silly and cute puppy behaviours(acceptable ones of course) but won’t the dog get mature by themselves? I know a person who has a one-year-old Golden Retriever, but that dog is not as childish as my dog… When will a large breed dog like a Golden grow out of their puppyhood? Is it good for him to stay like this though?? I am willing to do whatever that is good for him 🙂

After I finished reading the condition about your”puppy”!
I give you two suggestion:

First:your dog still needs obedient trainning, although he followed the sit command and heel command.
The social position of your dog is still too high!

Second:You need to praise the right behabior but not punish the bad behavior,he was so activity is because you always encourged him to do so….

I know you want him to be more stable,but if you keep on doing so, your dog will still behave like a puppy.
you need to calm down ,follow your mind not your eyes,to react with your dog .The most important thing is to Praise the right behavior!!!!
(for example: ask him to sit stay before he meet other animal.praise him when he stays well just after seeing other animal,keep on doing so, you will see what you want!)
